ASC ATHLETICS DAY 2009!!

It was a cold day, even the spectators were brave.

We began the day with form assembly. After that the teachers and students from every class and year level headed to where their house was assigned. As the Long, Weinberg, Cumming and Bainbridge houses checked if their team-mates were present and accounted for, the rooms were filling up with the spirit and adrenalin of competition.

As soon as possible, Ms. White and crew were announcing the events under a shade cloth on the oval. Our young athletes got ready for their events. In the community centre, girls and boys jumped as high as they could over the high jump bar to claim the blue 1st place ribbon. On the oval, age groups gathered together to race in 3000m, 1500m, 800m, 200m and 100m sprints. Everybody who stepped out on that field gave it their all and never gave up.

Back at school, the office ladies were as always working hard to keep the reception part of the school running. Javelin, shot-put, discus, triple jump and long jump events were also taking place. Mookie and crew kept our stomachs full with delicious hot food and fruit which was served all day.

They jumped long and high

Drawing closer to the end of the day, our school’s young athletes were barely breaking a sweat. We were fit, strong and determined to claim victory for our house. Every event was coming to a close with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons given out to all who worked for it.

.

It was now time for the relays. The majority of Alexandra Secondary College’s teachers and students gathered together in the centre of the oval for briefing. Each house and age group separated into four parts along the track. We were all looking forward to this final event. Hearts pumping, adrenalin running, the athletes were ready to run the final race for the day. Everyone not participating in the relays stood closely to the sidelines around the track cheering their team-mates and friends on. You could see the determination of each athlete as they passed and the frustration on their faces when someone overtook them. It was a battle waiting to be won and all those who set foot on the battle field ran to the best of their abilities.

Everyone held their heads high in the spirit of competition and sportsmanship. Today wouldn’t have been possible without the organisation and hard work each individual put in. Special thanks to Mr. Francis who set up the day and thanks to all the effort and hard work he put in, the day was very successful. We often underestimate our peers and today showed us that together we can face challenges even when it’s wet and icy-cold.

.
Some ran all day.

At the end of the day we assembled in the community centre as one student body; where we acknowledged the achievements of our peers. On athletics day, many people tried their hardest, many people strived to better themselves and others stared beyond belief and accomplished more than they would ever expect. Congratulations to LONG HOUSE who siezed the victory! Scores: Long= 1309, Cumming= 1233, Weinberg= 1127 and Bainbridge= 1046. Long’s victory wasn’t won just by 1st place positions, but by the participation of their members. Team-mates participated in many events, not because they were necessarily good at it, but because they were willing to give it a go. The participation, commitment and efforts of each person on this day made the day successful and most of all, fun.
